Hi Andrew,
Thank you for these instructions. It’s good to have several options. Again I
am most thankful for your patience and help.

Hi Gary
Yes, pressing p pauses. Press again to resume.
While hoping not to over-complicate your life, here is another option. Press
x. That will stop the recording and put the cursor at that point. Having
turned the record over and ready to record side 2, press r to recommence
recording. Either option will work. There may even be times where you want to
clean up the end of the recording thus far. In such cases, stop the recording
and do any necessary tidying, put the cursor at the end of the track and press
r when ready to go again.
Are you up to speed with selecting tracks and selecting audio within tracks?
If not, worth getting those tricks under your belt.
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Yes, it’s working great. I sent you a private message but, I’ll ask it here.
I am going to digitize my record collection and would like to know if I can
pause recording so I can turn the record over and continue recording on the
same track? Thanks for any help.

Hi Gary
I think we are talking at crossed purposes. I was thinking you were on the
tracks panel, which is the default location when opening Audacity. Pressing
control-shift-f6 takes you to the toolbar at the top of the screen. Tabbing or
shift tabbing along it will show you lots of goodies, including the combo boxes
for setting record and playback devices. Pressing control-f6 will take you
back to the tracks panel, which is the ideal place to be before recording.
Does that work?

Hi Gary
Do you definitely have the turntable selected as recording device? If so,
continue to shift tab along the toolbars and you should get to sliders for
playback and record volume. Make sure that both are at least reasonably high.
If you have Audacity set to play through the internal soundcard, the default
setting should let you monitor while recording.
To move between toolbars at the top of the screen, the tracks panel and the
toolbars at the bottom, press control-f6. Pressing shift-control-f6 takes you
in the opposite direction.
You are not a pest, you are learning.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for all your help. I seem to be having a problem. I have the usb codec
selected but when I go to track 1 and start the turntable and hit the r key and
wait when I hit the space bar nothing plays. What are some of the settings
that I need to check? Also is there a way to monitor the recording while
recording? I’m sorry I am such a pest. Thanks for all your help.

Gary, forgot to mention. When you unplug the turntable it would certainly be
worth checking that Audacity’s settings are where you want them. It will
probably drop to the primary sound driver which, with a single sound card is
probably ok but I prefer to set to a specific card.

Right, Gary. When NVDA gets rerouted by a USB device it is convenient to load
JAWS, which will still have the correct setting, and use it to fix NVDA. Then
unload JAWS.

Jaws works in much the same way. It is a terrible annoyance when I am adding an
audio USB device and I lose speech to. This is why I have both jars and NVDA on
my computer. When Jaws loses its connection to the soundcard, I will then lunch
NVDA and make Jaws reroute back to its original setting. You can probably do
the same with a demo version of jaws and NVDA if you have not purchased a Jaws
license.

Yes, when you connect your turntable Windows treats it as another sound card.
The same happens with USB headphones, mixers and mics. You lose speech when
you select it from NVDA because your turntable has no speaker.
What you need to do is to have NVDA using your existing soundcard and Audacity
recording from the turntable. Having connected the turntable and convinced
NVDA to output through the normal soundcard, you need to change Audacity's
input.
Open Audacity. There are two ways of making the necessary change, either
through Preferences or from a toolbar. Through Preferences:
1. Press control-p to open Preferences.
2. Press d until you get to Devices.
3. Start tabbing through the options. Leave playback on your usual soundcard.
When you get to Recording press up or down arrows until you find the USB codec.
4. Press Enter to get back to the normal Audacity screen.
The other option is to press control-shift-f6 to get to the toolbars at the top
of the screen. Shift-tab until you reach playback and recording combo boxes.
In the recording combo box, use up/down arrows to select the USB codec. Press
Enter and press control-f6 to get back to the tracks panel.

Hi Robert,
I changed my device to my internal sound card. I noticed that when I am in
nvda settings under output I now have an usb codec. When I go to it I lose
speech again. Also when I go into audacity and try to record from my turntable
I get the sounds from the mike. Also are there any settings I need to change
in audacity? Thanks for any help.bert Hänggi
