Clearly Audacity does have Transport > Timer Record, so I 
must disagree with that.

As far as I know, Timer Record is accessible. It does have an 
issue that the dialogue sits on top of the main Audacity 
window, and it lacks any way to set multiple recording events. 

And if you want Audacity to shut the computer down after 
recording, it can't.

But I really don't think it's that bad.
