Kim, InPortuguese you will most often find the tilde over a before o. For example, San Franciso in English and Spanish is Sao - with a tilde over the a - Francisco in Portuguese. Mano is Spanish is mao - with a tilde over the a - in Portuguese. Circumflex will most often be over an o occurring as the only vowel in a syllable. It would be very rare to find umlauts in Portuguese. Even in the Linguistics Department in Brazil we just ignored the umlaut in the word lingüística .
