Hi Stephanie! Welcome to the world of proofreading! Please be sure to not work off of the original download. Load it into Word and save as maybe as the filename without your name so that you can distinguish it from the original. No matter how experienced a person is, anyone can have what I call a "dumb" second and save changes that were not wise. I've done it, and I've been proofreading since late October. I also like to have a new file for each proofreading session, though others never do that, so that is a personal choice. I save each copy with a number so 1 gets saved as 2 in the filename, and so on.
It doesn't matter how you choose to handle this as long as you have a virgin file to fall back on if necessary..
