I understand land mines are important to get rid of. Does this mean that the money I pay for my bookshare subscription is not going to support bookshare but is instead being diverted to other projects?

We were told that John was to be liaison betweeen the bookshare staff and volunteers. If his job has been redefined, who is going to do that job?

Also if resources are being taken away from bookshare to support other projects by the organization, does this include programming resources?

Hi, Elizabeth. It is my understanding that John works as customer service support for all of the Benetech projects, not just Bookshare. If that's the case, I imagine he's spread pretty thin. I could be wrong about the scope of his job description. I think Benetech is working with some technology for finding land mines, and that sounds like pretty heavy duty work because it could save a lot of lives. They are also working on technology and data analysis regarding genocide and other human rights issues. If that is what John is working on, I'd rather have him doing that than answering questions about footnotes. I do care about Bookshare and even the footnotes. It's a matter of priorities though. Land mines kill people, usually people who have nothing to do with the wars fought around them. I'd love it if Bookshare had its own support person, but that's not too likely unless we find a way to get grant money to cover paying a full-time staff member. These are just some of the things I'm thinking about.

I just figure since he is supposed to be liaison between the volunteers and staff I at least want to know he reads the list regularly. Then I want to know whether it is his responsibility to comment on issues where the volunteers want feedback from staff. The last few issues included things like splitting up sentences across page boundaries, footnote notation, splitting sentences or putting them together on one side or another of captions, the wish list, and volunteers who are having difficulty subscribing.

He may be speaking to individual volunteers about issues. However, if the issue is one which many of us come up with perhaps he will want to reply to the list in future rather than to individuals so we all can learn.

E, I was wondering about what John's day is like also...I know that he
has always given me 'more scans' whenever I have asked him, but I think
it could help us understand certain 'things' if we had a notion about
what his 'normal' day is like.
