Hello all, Whether you'll use the lid or not to put pressure on the book wil depend on the type and size of that particular book. I've found that 9 times out of ten, the pressure with the lid is quite sufficient for not only the edges but for the binding as well. For normal-sized paperbacks, I often use my hands since I tend to set my scanner's margins for the length of the paperback and I tend to finish a particular scan in a very short time. Books that are slightly larger than paperbacks are the best candidates for using the lid as a pressure device. With the lid, you can apply firm, consistent pressure whereas that may not happen consistently without the lid, especially when you're dealing with large books. HTH.
