Personally I found that holding the book with my hands resulted in better
scans. So, thanks to whoever told me that you could scan with the lid up.

HI Cindy: It's quite safe to hold down the lid. That's what I used to do initially. But I find that I have better control of the book by pressing down on the book with my hands.
