Dean, I just wanted to commend you for your extraordinarily clear and tactful observations. Perhaps Nan will feel easier in her mind about validating after reading this, and will feel that she can ask specific questions so that list members can help her. I suspect part of the difficulty here is that Bookshare is evolving, and opinions differ about what needs to be done to validate. Originally, the notion was that some errors in the books are acceptable, after all, they are scans, and many of us have read and enjoyed them with imperfections. this idea is gradually changing, or so it seems to me. so you won't find a hard and fast curriculum with do's and don't's and steps to follow. There is room for individual approaches. There are some hard rules: verify copyright, make sure book is complete and not a duplicate, that title and author are accurate and in proper format, that there are page breaks, report on book quality. Other improvements are good ideas but are optional. Many of those on this list spend a lot more time validating books than I do, but from what I've read, my approach is within current guidelines. So do the required validations, do as much other improvement as you are willing and able to do, and ask questions on the list. Bookshare staff is good about stating requirements when they are requirements. If you want to achieve near perfection, as opposed to getting good-quality and readable books into the hands of desireous readers quickly, then people on this list can help you a lot.
