I also change the em dashes to dashes, primarily because when it's a book that I want to read through on my Pac Mate with the braille display, it doesn't read the em dashes as two hyphens and it bugs me. Also, it's a habit and it only takes a few seconds.

Hi Bob, For what it's worth, I still change em dashes to two hyphens too. I do it because I primarily read using Kurzweil, and it doesn't put in pauses when em dashes are used, as it should, but does when double hyphens are used. Changing the em dashes to double hyphens harms nothing as eventually the tools do the same thing. I think psychologists call that behavior superstitious behavior. But, what harm does it do? So I'll keep doing it. Thanks. I am fortunate to have both MsWord 2003 and Kurzweil 1000 to proof with. I always start with word to do a few things you can't do in Kurzweil like changing m dashes to dashes. That's when your tip would come in handy. Kurzweil remembers where I left off so I don't have to. Oh yes, the first thing I always do is make a new copy of the file so I will always have a backup. Thanks. You can put it in the filename, or just make sure that it's in the first page of the proofing copy so you won't forget. I always make a proofing copy of a Bookshare proof. That way I've always got the original if I screw up badly enough to warrant deep sixing the working copy. Here is a small tip for a Monday morning. I put a line at the top of the working copy to remind me what page I stop at after proofing for a while. It just says: at nnnn whatever number I'm at. It's really helpful. Once I'm done proofing, I just erase the 'at' line. Makes it so much easier to use the ctrl-g command in Word to go back to my place. Ann P. -- Ann K.
