I may be wrong but I think we don't have to do that any more; I think you can leave them alone. But just in case, and for you edification, the -- is 2 hyphen marks; the hyphen is in the top line of the keyboard, under a longer line (which I don't know what is used for. It's nt an em dash, and when I just wrote it by using the shift key and that key, I got this: _ a line twice as long as one hyphen.
