[blind-philly-comp] Re: A link to something about a navigational tool that might not see the light of day and or might not be affordable

The (hahahaha) laser cane was an $1800 joke when I first tried it. It didn't see
glass, you still had to use a cane, the angle for other things was impossible
and may still be.

Drexil sent some 2nd year students over and I talked politely about their
assignment to develop a laser cane. Starting with, "it's been out there for 20
years (at that time)". But the prof kept sending them, so I asked them to carry
ideas back to him, they were afraid to speak out of line. So I started

Sending notes. They seemed to be a little brighter each year. So I went "hard
core" and showed them parked trailers, outward phone booths, having no ground
profile, etc. That didn't work fast enough, so I went out without using my cane
very well and slammed into each item knowing where it was. They were upset. I
said that unless their "new laser cane" would give me "half a piece of plywood"
(or better) in coverage, they could spend their time on other things. I wrote
that down.

I think it was a mindless excersize and just "busy work". But, I still have
hopes, though it is not glamourous, when blind folks can now just jump in their
car and have it drive them to the parking lot or drop them off at work.

(hahaha)

You are entirely welcome.

Hmmm. if some have braille printers, and others have big stereos like John and I
do, I don't imagine a $550 traveling computer would be useless to others than
those who think that of themselves.

Realize, $7000 EU is $7700 US in the grant they were given.

They said it would be about $500 EU.

That was a little harsh Lil.

Don't mention it.

Hi, Christina;

Just curious but why would you send us a link to something that none of us can
afford even if it ever becomes available? It just seems like a waste of your
valuable time to me if the info's interesting but useless. Take care.

Lillian
