Just echoing Elmar here.
In the US, in real estate, there is saying something like, "When you
buy property, three things matter. Location, location, and
location." In Systemic work, perhaps, the similar aphorism might be
something like "Look first at context, context, and context."
I'll offer one more example that doesn't fit an easy answer.
What about the man who found he really enjoyed killing? For whom it
became a real thirst--a dark, crazy joy even. And who now comes
around to us crushed almost by the enormity of what he found within
himself. He was drafted, didn't want to go, but Viet Nam turned him
into into a crack sniper. Here there would seem to be real personal
responsibility, on the one hand, plus a need for us to help him
resolve the systemic displacements that he most likely in all
innocence inherited, on the other. To find peace, would he not have
to stand somehow both in that guilt AND in that innocence?
There are so many different ways the experience of combat might play
out.
Best,
Michael
