I don't know if it is relevant to how the word "constellation"
originally got chosen as a translation for "Aufstellung," or
"aufstellen"--but, there is a book in English by Walter Toman,
originally written in 1961 (4th edition 1993), entitled FAMILY
CONSTELLATION: ITS EFFECT ON PERSONALITY AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR (NYC:
Springer).
Though it very much predates Hellinger's synthesis and approach, it is
nevertheless an interesting and valuable book. It has sections
analyzing the typical sorts of relationships that spring up between
this or that kind of family member in such and such a family system.
It has section titles such as: "Oldest Brother of Brothers,"
"Youngest Brother of Brothers," "Oldest Brother of Sisters," etc, and
then "Parents without Rank and Sex Conflicts," "Parents with a Partial
Sex Conflict," etc, and "Only Children," "Twins," "Age Differences."
The book seems to have a pretty wide research base, much of which
happened in Europe as well as the US.
While I too have problems at times with the word
"constellation" (primarily the astrological connotation), still, it
seems too embedded in writings and search engines to change. Also, it
has become productive (in the linguistic sense)--and we now have
"constellator," and "to constellate." So, among ourselves at least,
we now say things like "Are you constellating the man's family, or
parts of his inner psyche"?
