I'm guessing it was the helper/rescuer that's been left out. There is
an interchangeability about all of the roles - a kind of 'pass the
parcel' game - maybe more like pass the power.
I think the hardest thing in the victim/persecutor/rescuer triangle
is finding the place where all of them/us realise their/our lack of
power and hand over all belief in any sense of control as they/we bow
to fate.
And that needs to be balanced against the possibility that we do have
free will and we are responsible/accountable for our decisions and
actions - especially for what happens when we are in positions of
power.
For the victim to act as though they had some sort of control in the
situation of being abused protects them from facing that devastating
loss of power - and maybe that's a necessary support for a while.
