Good and Evil
We divide the world into good and bad, condemning the bad and hailing the good.
Whatever is easiest for us we hail as good, healthy, and comforting because it
is easy and does not involve conflict; and whatever is hardest for us we
condemn as evil, sick, and confrontational, and think of as bad.
But if we look more closely, we discover that the force that changes the world
is difficult, harsh, even malevolent. The challenge of the new comes from what
we would rather eliminate and exclude.
When we try to avoid what is unpleasant, sinful, and confrontational, we lose
precisely what we wanted to keep, namely our life, dignity, freedom, and
greatness. Only he who confronts the dark forces and accepts their existence is
connected to his roots and the sources of his strength. This is beyond good or
evil. It is in harmony with something larger in its depths and strength.
So I believe many of us who have sympathy with the peace movement would do well
to acknowledge the George Bush and Saddam Hussein that exist in all of us.
I also wonder if these men don't really value life because they haven't fully
accepted their own lives from their own parents.
