Hi Dave, does the sound change as the volume is lowered or raised? Also, any
chance you can record the sound so we can have a listen? The problem could be
hum, but it could also be EMI being picked up by either the unit's cicuits or
the pre-amps themselves. Also, does this unit have the ability to use a
standalone power supply? I know the older ones did, if so, you might want to
try it in standalone mode with no usb plugged in, to check if the sound is
still present. If it is hum, it will probably still be there. It should
definitely still be there if it's a falt with the unit. But if the noise goes
away, then it can be interfearance with the computer or the unit is picking
things up from nearby. BTW, do you have USB3.0/3.1 products connect on that
computer?

The sound is definitely coming from both the headset and regular outputs. Tried
a couple cables with same problem so far. I could picture the fantom power
section being the problem but hoping not. These models are not very expensive,
but also may not be worth the bench fees if it is the unit itself.
Unfortunately it could also be in the computer and sure don't look forward to
setting everything back up again with sonar if thats the case. You got to do,
what ya got to do though. Thanks again for observations. Any tip could be one

I think these signs are positive. If you jack into it with a guitar phantom
power is not used and may remain silent from hum. XLR cables could possibly
cause hum but my feeling is probably not the cable or connectors. Still
think trying different types of microphones, condenser/diaphragm, to see the
effect. Eliminate the possibilities and you are left with the truth so to
say.
Of course if the hum is only coming through the headset and not speakers then
an electrical fault could be in the headset to preamp circuitry. A
professional tech would have to look at this. Of course if new exchange it.
Or better yet bring the unit back to where you purchased it and ask why to
the headsets hum? If hum is known to exist they would know the fix. Just a
thought.

Andre, thanks for all the suggestions and will definitely try all of them. Am
thinking a good chance is the xlr cable so have a few to try.
Am definitely not hearing this sound when using line in from my guitar so now
am thinking either the mic or cable going in. I'm also trying all the
different usb ports in event that one works better over the others.

If you have a two pronged plug. Try pulling it out flipping it over and
plugging it back in. This reverses the chassy ground and might help.
Also try another microphone. The mic could be going bad. Switch to a
regular diaphragm mic that does not require phantom power. If hum goes away
then It's may be a bad mic or possibly phantom power circuitry related, or
both. Any circuitry should be looked at by a professional. Bring it to a
pro or exchange it if it's new.
Another thing you can try is simply clean the USB plug and port with
denatured alcohol and a cotton swab. Swab the port gently, you don't want
to leave any fibers behind. While USB plug is still damp with alcohol plug
in and out several times quickly to assist cleaning metal contact
connections.
Last; fingerprint oils and many contaminents human hands come in contact
with are transmitted to the USB plug and on to the port if you touch the
metal contacts of the USB plug at all with your bare hand. Never touch the
metal contacts!!!

Like you said, it could be a grounding issue.
If you have a access to a laptop, use the audio interface with the
laptop running on battery without power.
Then don't plug in anything into the audio interface except
microphone, and listen with a headphone instead of speaker. If the
hum goes away, then it's most likely a electrical problem.

I just bought a Scarlett 2i2 second generation, and played for a
day. I wanted to let you know what to expect in terms of
accessibility. Let's go from good news to bad news.
The hardware is 100% accessible. Everything is switches, knobs, and
a button.
On Mac side, there's nothing to install, it works out of the box.
There's an optional low latency driver. Even if you install the
optional driver, there's no software for control panel.
You set latency and sampling rate in your DAW. This is no problem
if you use Pro Tools and Logic, but if you use software that
doesn't let you adjust latency, this might be a problem. One
example would be the latest Garageband.
I might have missed, but I couldn't find where you can adjust the
latency outside DAW. I didn't see anything about it in the manual
either. This should be a problem for everyone, not just VI users.
On Windows, you have to install their driver, and unfortunately the
Asio panel is not accessible. Screen reader reads only minimize and
maximize, not even the title. I haven't tested, but this might not
be a problem if you use wdm or Asio4All.
If you need an affordable, simple, secondary audio interface, it
fits the bill. There you go.
