To prevent Microsoft downloading and installing Windows 10 on your computer,
you need to turn off the Recommended Updates setting in Windows Update and hide
Windows 10 from the list of available recommended updates.
In Windows 7, go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows
Update. Click the Change settings link on the left.
Look for the Recommended updates entry and make sure it’s unchecked. Click OK.
In Windows 8.1 you can either follow the same steps listed above, or you can go
through the PC Settings app. Go to Settings > Update and recovery > Windows
update and select Choose how updates get installed. Uncheck the Recommended
Updates box and click Apply.
Windows 10 will still appear as an available update, but it won’t be
automatically installed now.
Finally, right-click on the Windows 10 update, and select Hide Update to make
sure you don't install it by mistake.

I haven't heard this rumor; but I wouldn't put anything passed Microsoft to
do something like this. I'm with you in that I sure hope to hell they don't
resort to what I'd call militant tactics; and yes, I believe Microsoft has
been aggressive to the point where it's becoming militant. Now I don't want
anybody to get the idea that I'm against progress; I just don't like things
being shoved down everybody's throat - especially in a bad economy. I don't
think enough time has been given to third-party developers to do a halfway
decent job rebuilding and/or revamping products so they'll work properly on
Windows 8 - let alone Windows 10. There aren't the resources to continually
have to spend countless dollars and hours keeping up with it all. If the
changes were more subtle instead of rolling out massive new things at once,
maybe there'd be a better chance that support products can be developed or
retooled to accommodate the OS.
I personally think that Microsoft should be litigated if they resort to
automatically upgrading the OS without user input. Next thing you know
they'll be billing you for products and services that they claim you need
regardless of whether you approved them or not. Even the Mac OSs aren't
automatically upgraded until you've accept the terms and hit the button - so
to speak. Yeah - I know; I suppose they could change that too. Be that as it
may, it's a really bad idea - at least in the climate that we're in right
now. Believe me; I had a lot of respect for Microsoft in the early days, but
not so much any more. The same will be said for Apple as well if they keep
going in the direction they're going. Right now I see very little in quality
control with either company when it comes to getting OSs out there as quickly
as possible. That seems to be the corporate way now; get it out there, then
mop up the hellacious messes later. That's hardly a wise use of resources.

This is good information, thank you.
Anyone else hear the rumor that MicroSoft is considering moving the
Windows 10 upgrade to automatic upgrades.
This is horrifying to me.
I hope to hell it's not true.
I for one keep my studio machine off line except for very rare
occasions Obviously I have another machine with Windows 7 for nearly
everything on-line.
