There's a fine balance with this. Most business advisers will tell you that one of the major reasons for young business to fail is that they don't charge enough for their services. Under-charging, or not charging at all, can lead potential clients thinking that, if you don't value what you're offering, why should they value it? I doubt that they got their instruments for nothing by telling the guy in the store that he'd get some exposure... This may sound harsh and I'm not saying that there's no place for freebies or discounts, but you've got to be very careful about them as a way of getting goingg. Remember that "professional" means you can pay the rent. Best wishes. We can't pay you, but *long pause* I've written them back, inquiring about what they plan to charge for their CD, tracks online etc. If they reply with a figure, like so much a CD, I'll counter with a tiny percentage of that, like 50 cents an album or something. Is there any merit at all to that "do it for exposure" argument? I like to say "you can die from exposure", but I also don't want to turn down work, since I'm having trouble finding it to begin with. *laugh* Am I more of a sucker if I refuse jobs, or if I do those jobs but for nothing? *LOL* I realize it's hard economically for bands and artists starting out, but I'm thinking also that if I don't value my skills and time, nobody else will either!
