Chris, you really have to look at who you are doing the work for. I
personally don't go on the do everything for nothing philosophy, as you can
end up doing a lot for nothing. Have done work for people before but,
always generally charged something or, worked out a barter that benefits
both parties. Also, as a good friend of mine comments, "if a job wants
doing badly enough then, people will pay for it." Think your idea of taking
so much per CD isn't a bad one as mixing and mastering, really is an art and
can turn someone's work from something that's ok to something that sounds
fantastic.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I've had one offer to mix an album for someone,
simply for the exposure. We can't pay you, but *long pause* I've written
them back, inquiring about what they plan to charge for their CD, tracks
online etc. If they reply with a figure, like so much a CD, I'll counter
with a tiny percentage of that, like 50 cents an album or something.

Is there any merit at all to that "do it for exposure" argument? I like to
say "you can die from exposure", but I also don't want to turn down work,
since I'm having trouble finding it to begin with.
*laugh*

Am I more of a sucker if I refuse jobs, or if I do those jobs but for
nothing? *LOL* I realize it's hard economically for bands and artists
starting out, but I'm thinking also that if I don't value my skills and
time, nobody else will either!

Chris
