The key action is floppy, and the keys themselves are hollow. They’re also not rounded, so you’ll hurt your hand playing sweaps for instruments like organ. It has drum pads, but they aren’t anything like what you’d find on an Akai MPC. You must pound them in order for your strike to register. When I played them, they’d regularly not register strikes at all. The knobs and sliders are also made of particularly flimsy feeling plastic. If you want to see one, go to Guitar Center, as they have lots of them. I’ve been suggesting the Roland A-Pro series controllers for a while as the best budget controller. These were formerly sold as Cakewalk A-Pro. The key action is pretty good, keys are rounded, and the build, while plastic, seems more solid. There are drum buttons, not pads, but the buttons actually register strikes. The software for the Roland controllers is accessible, which isn’t the case with the Axiom. If you have more money, the Novation Remote controllers have a keyboard that feels very close to a pro synth, though the construction is still plastic. There is also CME. The CME controllers are built just like a pro synth, but they also cost quite a bit more than Axioms. In terms of the knobs/sliders/buttons, the Roland controllers are preset for Sonar and ACT, while the Novation and CME controllers must be programmed/tweaked a bit to work. Have you looked at the Axiom range before, do you think they will be just as accessible? I like the trigger pads for doing drums that they offer. -original message- Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Midi keyboard controlers From: D!J!X! <megamansuperior@xxxxxxxxxxx> Date: 17/03/2011 20:04 It has both pitch wheel and modulation wheel, both which are assignable. It also has transpose buttons and octave shift. It doesn't require special drivers, so windows recognizes it with no problems. I've used it under xp and 7, both work fine, in either 32 or 64 bit systems. It uses the keys themselves to program. You just have to write down what each key does... It has 9 sliders, 9 assignable buttons, 8 nobs, and transport buttons. You can save presets or use factory made ones. Uses either USB or midi dim. You can use it with or without a computer, I use it as a secondary keyboard with my motif, for organs and such... You can get an external power supply and run it standalone.
