I don't know why your system is that unstable. Was this laptop put together and configured specifically for audio work?
You don't want to worry about the older Cakewalk Effects. For years now, Sonar has come with the Sonitus plug-ins, which are much higher quality. Also, they have been thoroughly scripted for in CakeTalking. Try the Sonitus Reverb, compressor, modulation, etc. See the CakeTalking tutorial for information on how to access the parameters and presets.
