it is a sampler only, there is no sound engine. It can load any wave sample though. I think aiff as well... As far as instrument samples like pianos and stuff like that. it isn't the most practical tool for that type of job. I have owned one for about 3 years now and I use it for live gigging. background voices and click tracks for my drummer. I also use it in the studio for hip-hop tracks. I usually use it in stand alone mode though. I rarely connect it to the computer or anything via midi.
