Absolutely agree. I took monthly classical piano lessons for three years and the scales/fingerings were extremely helpful to my ability to play pieces I already knew, as well as making it easier to learn new ones. Knowing the scales is part of the whole concept of chord structure. Having the teacher sit there side-by-side to help explain the correct fingering techniques was the only way I was going to ever learn correctly. Using a book with finger numbers would not have worked for me. That'll be a great help already. Have you looked for a traditional piano teacher, someone who would work with you through an established system, conservatory, Suzuki, etc.?
