The windows was definitely a clean install. And I had reformatted it about a 
year ago.

Sorry, that wasn't too helpful.  How long a go did you install Windows XP?  Was 
it a clean install with all patches slipstreammed into the install?  or, have 
you had that build on you're machine for quite some time?  If the latter
 then, it could be time for a clean install of Windows and software again.  
Thank goodness I won't have to do that until the next version of Windows comes 
out as I have Windows, imaged in various states.  Thannks to Sean, herman and 
Jack for getting me into using Acronis.  If you have a clean image of Windows 
with software installed then, you won't have to do that either.
