Well, I usually start via midi, just because you have a bit more editing flexibility, then I convert the midi tracks over to audio. I like to use 16 midi tracks, because that's how many tracks external sequencers on synthesizers usually have. When doing this, track 10 is usually used for drums by default. However, I like to separate my drums and play each drum on an individual track. So, I'll use tracks 10-16 for drums. As far as I know, Sonar doesn't really do patterns the way an external synth does. I'll just record a basic number of bars with a kick for example, and then copy and paste it for a couple hundred measures until I play more instruments. After I play all my instrument parts, I'll then decide how i want the song laid out, then I'll start deleting different parts for verse, chorus, fills, etc.
