You can make this test in almost any program. You can use Notepad, Wordpad,
Word, WordPerfect, or of course use Duxbury or PerkyDuck. I think some people
have even done it from the c: prompt while in DOS. The test is to press the s,
d, f, j, k, and l keys at the same time. If all six letters appear, in any
order, the keyboard supports six key entry. If any of the letters are missing,
you probably won't be able to do six key entry with that key board. If you go
to www.braille-pokadot.com you will find a link to more information about
keyboards. Frequently the $10-15 keyboards you can buy at Best Buy, WalMart,
and similar stores will support direct entry. It seems that the more expensive
keyboards are the ones that won't work.

George has also posted in the past directions for setting up keys on the qwerty
row for six key entry.

You will have to go into Perky and use the 6 key entry to test. All of our
newer Dell keyboards will not accept multiple key strikes because of the built
in error checking. I did find that some older Dells that will work, any
SK-1000xx model keyboard will work, otherwise we just purchase the cheapest
keyboards we can find to replace for Duxbury/Perky users.

I know this information has been shared on list but at the time I didn't
need it and now I do and I have a volunteer here so can't go searching. So
I'm hoping some kind soul will send me the answer.

I have some volunteers who will be using PerkyDucks. Can you tell me again
how I know when a keyboard will do direct entry? Can I go into Word and try
out the keyboard or do I have to be in Duxbury?

  Thanks bunches,

  Deb B.
