I think it's about my question--a two-parter--about hard returns (bad) and also
about maneuvering through websites using Jaws. The response...which was really
helpful, listed many of the keyboard commands for doing so & it must have
looked daunting.

Hello.

Generally, the answer to your first question is yes. The reason is that you
normally only want to force a new line if you aren't already at the beginning
of a new line. Ctrl-l does this conditional line break, whereas the enter key
will insert a command that will produce a new line even if there are already
three or more blank lines. If you really want consecutive blank lines, it is
best do accomplish this by using a variant of the skip lines or cut page
commands.

Regarding your second question, there are a number of JFW commands that might
be helpful:
List links with INSERT+F7.
List headings with INSERT+F6,
or move between them with CTRL+INSERT+ENTER or CTRL+INSERT+SHIFT+ENTER.
List frames with INSERT+F9,
or move between them with CTRL+TAB or CTRL+SHIFT+TAB.
Move between form fields with CTRL+INSERT+TAB or CTRL+INSERT+SHIFT+TAB.
When on a form control, press ENTER to activate Forms Mode.
To exit forms mode, press NUM PAD PLUS.
Within a table, press ALT+CTRL+Arrow keys to move between the cells.
To skip a series of links, press INSERT+ENTER.
To return to the previous page, press BACKSPACE.
To move to the first or last heading, press alt+Insert+Home and alt+Insert+End.
To move to the next or prior heading at a specific level, press alt+JAWSKey+5
through 6 and alt+insert+shift+6 through 6 respectively.
To move to the first or last heading at a specific level, press
alt+control+JAWSKey+1 through 6 and alt+control+JAWSKey+shift+3 through 6
respectively.
To move forward in the page past links to a body of text, press JAWSKey+Enter.
To update the screen view, to the location of the Virtual Cursor press
JAWSKey+Escape.
To jump to the first control on a form, press Control+Insert+Home.
To jump to the next control on a form, press Control+Insert+Tab.
To jump to the previous control on a form, press Control+Insert+Shift+Tab.
To jump to the last control on a form, press Control+Insert+End.
To toggle Virtual Cursor mode on or off, press JAWSKey+Z.
When you land on a control, and wish to turn on forms mode to input
information, press Enter.
To turn Virtual Cursor back on, press NumPadPlus.

These application-specific commands are available in JFW at any time by
pressing insert+f1 or insert+h.

So, I should never use the enter key to start a new line when working in
Duxbury--I should use control L. Is that right?

Also, we have a student who surfs the net for school information, but
everything is read, including every button and advertisement. It is confusing
for her and she doesn't always know when it is starting to read the primary
information on the page...plus it takes up alot of her time on unnecessary
items. Does anyone know if when using Jaws you can specify reading the primary
body of text only? I know this is not specifically Duxbury, but many of you
seem very knowledgeable about Jaws and I don't know who else to ask.

N
p.s. Being on this list has been most educating and fun. George, I've said it
before...you're awesome--everybody knows it. Steve and David's responses have
been very useful, too. Sadly, tho' it points out to me how much I don't know.
