Hello, George: George provided an important rule of grammar for distinguishing the hyphen from the dash. Examining the computer keyboard, however, you find this is not adhered to, as the screen reader fails to make the distinction. Of course, this confusion is in line with the majority of Americans who cannot tell the hyphen from the dash, going by the common rule. In teaching Braille reading and writing to Americans, I see they consistently commit this error, because they grew up not able to understand and/or make the distinction between the hyphen and the dash. Those of us who were immersed in the British system of education never call the hyphen the dash. Essentially in print, a hyphen is unspaced, and a dash is spaced. For example:- Jean-Luc Picard - appears in Star Treck. There would be no space and a single hyphen in the name, but there would be spaces and a double dash between the name and the word "appears". I'm sure Warren will be able to clarify this better in BANA terms. George.
