NCBI's I T Trainer Miriam Kelly has left us the following tips for those of
you that use an Alexa-enabled smart speaker.
Miriam is a big advocate for smart speakers and loves to teach people how to
use them. Smart speakers can make some big tasks seem very easy by using a
simple voice command.
1. Teach Alexa to Whisper!
Perhaps it's late at night or the baby is sleeping, and you would like Alexa
to whisper her responses. You can turn on whisper mode on your device.
Say "Alexa Turn on Whisper mode". Alexa will respond with a confirmation
that Whisper mode is on. Now in a whisper voice say, "Alexa what time is
it?" Alexa will whisper her response.
You can also try saying something like "Whisper Alexa, who is Barack Obama"?
Alexa will whisper the response. Alexa will only whisper a response if you
whisper the question, otherwise it operates as normal.
2. How do you Spell?
Try saying something like "Alexa, spell psychedelic". Alexa will respond by
spelling out the word.
3. Read a Kindle Book
Alexa can read any book in your Kindle Library. For example, if you have a
book called Where the Crawdads Sing you can ask her to open this book by
saying "Alexa Open my book 'Where the Crawdads Sing'". Alexa will now open
this book from your Library and begin reading.
4. What did I say?
Sometimes when you ask Alexa a question, you may get a strange response. If
this happens, you can check to see what Alexa heard. After you get your
strange reply say "Alexa, what did I say?"
