[mac4theblind] Having problems disabling the preview pane in Mac mail on new iMac

Hi all I am setting up a brand new iMac with the latest OS updates. I have
always been able to disable the preview pane with the steps below but it does
not seem to work in this case. what am I doing wrong? Here are the steps I am
trying:
Move VO to the horizontal splitter
press VO COMMAND f5 to route mouse pointer
Double click the physical mouse
Any help would be appreciated.
