John & David, OK I got somewhat of a resolution to the problem with turning off
the preview pane in Mac mail. First I called ordinary Apple Care tech support
and the guy told me that you can’t turn it off. OK that wasn’t the answer I was
looking for. OK then I called the Apple Accessibility hotline and got someone
who really wanted to help. We tried everything we could with VO turned on and
didn’t work. You can no longer just click on it to turn it off. You have to
move it totally down to the bottom to where it disappears. With VO turned on it
can only get 85 percent of the way down. Luckily I had a sighted friend here
and she found out that just pulling it down wight he mouse doesn’t work either.
What you have to do with the mouse is push it all the way up and then all the
way down in one motion. The Apple guy decided this wasn’t good enough and should
be able to work with VO as well so he is going to send it over to engineering
as a bug report.
