I'd suggest having a look at ricardo walker's well done podcasts on garageband.
I don't hav a link, but I'm sure they won't be ard to find.

I know it can be done as I've heard Recardo Walker edit things like this before.

You need to save every time first and as for joining I cannot get that to work
at all witht he keystroke. and as for faiding you need to set a marker or an
automation curve which you cannot do with out sighted help.
