I don’t think VOiceOver is going anywhere and I wouldn’t sweat it at this
point. Let’s remember that Tim Cook is on the record as stating that
Accessibility is a human right and let’s also remember that the blind have
always been a focus for Apple because remember the two Steves had blind friends
or family members that inspired that attitude.
I actually met Woz several years back when I still lived in California
and that was quite an experience being my favorite Steve from Apple.:). He
still remains very interested in alternate access methods or at least was back
then and at that time I demoed a Pocket PC running MobileSpeak for him as a way
of making phones accessible. This would have been 2006 - 2007 time frame. I
don’t think it’s a function of Apple’s size but rather something that’s just
part of the Apple culture to make products as accessible as possible.
By the way here we also need to mention that this started a real cycle of
improvement for the blind community. Apple started the ball rolling more or
less and then once the bribes to the NFB from Freedom Scientific weren’t
sufficient and Microsoft grew a pair they now are making great strides in
accessibility including making narrator more usable. They are also focusing on
making tools more accessible for blind technologists so very helpful on the
employment front. In 2020 Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and pretty much all
the big FANG stocks take accessibility seriously now and handle it one way or
another in house. Love it, after recently getting a quote from FS to upgrade
JFW and not looking back after getting that quote I love this change. You’re
seeing accessibility now a lot more in non computers as well as Televisions,
set top boxes, just about anything with a screen. So thank you Apple and
Microsoft and of course Google for getting the ball rolling and let’s hope
things keep progressing. That is until Elon Musk solves the blindness problem
permanently with NeuralLink, something I’m in line for once it’s ready for
human implantation testing but can’t go in to much detail here.

However,it did create a folder of items that is not compatible to
Catalina,lot of them I wasn’t using anyways.
I just cannot believe a company as big as apple would not include VO in any
new product they sell.
