Root user is usable, but if a mistake happens within root user, it's a system wide mistake and can cause damage. unless you're a highly competent user, leave root user alone. Where it comes to an external HDD, I think you'll find that any number of issues can occur with even a new drive such as read write buffer underrun errors, caching errors, partition structure corruption errors and many more besides. I speak of what I know too well hence being in this background long enough. There are a number of tools to diagnose a drive's behaviour including it's data pass through. remember that the controller used to the drive may also be an issue. you must assess all areas of a system, component, etc before you make an assumption. what was the phrase? assume means making an ass out of u and me. lol I love that one. it's timeless. When dealing with cloning the drive or centents, I recommend the use of SuperDuper which allows access to case sensitive structures. converting to an ISO and mounting the ISO on the main HD would allow a data recovery where possible, then we can set to a volume rebuild. judging by the size of drive, contents to the drive, you should consider what the user has on the drive, even if the drive is from a system pull, etc. how many actual partitions are on the drive, etc. lew On 14 Oct 2013, at 13:47, David Hilbert Poehlman <poehlman1@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > how does one go about reformatting a drive like this?
