I did upgrade the laptop last night and I do agree. and having siri on the

I found Alex Compact amongst the available voices in VO Utility and it seems
to work fine with no noticeable degradation compared to the previous Alex
voice I was using.
So far Sierra seems a definite improvement on El Kapitan with only the
issue coming over from that OS that I need to restart VO to gain proper
navigation in the Message table when I open Mail.
To my relief all the busy messages I was getting in iBooks appear to have
been resolved.
