Some weight on the seat / pivot is reasonable, but the push method seems to be more objective than riding, which heavily depended on individual coordination / experience.

Exactly. A novice will find all sorts of pythons unrideable, but with the pushing-test he will get a quick hint if the beast is friendly or evil.
