Mein Fehler war, daß ich den Bezug von "1 meter" auf Höhe (uphill) anstelle von Spur bezogen habe. That's how English works, too. My Amerglish suggestion would be: Now, even on uphill stretches, I can stay on the width of a good bikepath or Now, even going uphill, I only need a meter of the street. both these suggestions make the referent of the meter one of width rather than height, which the original sentence has backwards, leading to the confusion on my part.
