I would be very reluctant to poke around with a conductive wire. The
Raspberry- Pi is very sensitive to mis-connection or the shorting together
of adjacent points.
This is in comparison to the Arduino, for instance, which is much tougher.

I generally advise that the breadboard, along with the processor board,
should be firmly located on a decent sized tray capable of supporting the
wrist while you are picking along the rows of holes.

As for breadboards, I use a a wire to count holes. It is not efficient but
kind of works.
