FWIW, just sort of tried it out a bit, and, while arecord does see the
generic USB audio device, and, seems to list it's input as device 0,
with a very quick little try out, couldn't seem to get it to create a
new audio file - scanning through short-term memory, typed in something
like:
arecord -t wav -d10 foobar.wav
And, it told me foobar.wav didn't exist, but anyway.
Will look into some more examples of actual arecord syntax, etc., but,
main thing is was using standard 3.5mm built-in output jack/socket, and,
like said, it did seem to recognise/pick up the external USB audio
adapter, so, seems like just need to figure out how to get arecord to
work with me.

choose, it can be very simple or very complicated. Some of it means playing
around with alsa and the like to get things sorted. It's been a while since
I tried this so I'm a little hazy on the details. Not sure how much
processing a pi can do so I don't want to suggest something as heavy as
audacity. Look at aplay and a record. These are already installed on
raspbian and probably ubuntu. Also check out sox.
