I know diddly squat about running linux directly. I have been ssh-ing
into linux boxes, and unix boxes, for decades, and I have run cygwin on my
Windows box for something like ten years, but don't know anything about
running with one of the linux desktops.
However, if you are having issues with speech and mate, then I would
recommend asking on the blinux mailing list, they seem pretty sharp over
there.
