I would appreciate the instructions on how to get speakUp working as well.
Everything I find is super old and my attempts with kernel arguments have
failed. I'm hoping pi and Debian are similar since I want to do both
distros (Debian forx84_64).
In the end, my goal is to have speech as early in the boot process as
possible. Then have speech both on the virtual consoles and GUI (via orca).
Any one actually succeed at this with recent versions of some Debian?

I installed speakup on the PI without Mike's OMX library and I can report
the following:
1. Speech works but, it is very distorted and the volume is not as loud
if using Mike's code.
2. The default settings is very slow.
3. I will revert to Mike's code as this seems to be a lot better.
4. When writing the image to a 128Gb card this gave me lots of problems
as Windows does not see the boot partition and insists on formatting the
card. I had to revert to a 32Gb card.
5. I am using Raspberry OS lite for this experiment.
My goal is to have a setup which has speech in both terminal and in mate but
with only software which works with speech.
So, back to writing and rewriting cards today.
