Checking the config files Didier mentioned, my system(a highly
customized Knoppix with most packages sourced from Debian Testing) is
also using alsa via libao. I also don't have pulseaudio on my system,
though I do have libpulse0 as it's in the dependency tree for
Orca(Orca depends on speechdispatcher, which depends on
speechdispatcher-audio-plugins, which depends on libpulse0), though
I'm not sure I have anything that actually uses it.
Also, this might be out-of-date, but I remember reading that
pulseaudio can cause issues when switching between Graphical and
console sessions using speech. Something about
Orca/speechdispatcher/pulseaudio monopolizing the sound card so the
console session's screen reader can't produce sound if I remember
correctly. Not a big deal for people who stick strictly to one or the
other, but I'm constantly switching between a graphical session on
tty1 and console sessions on tty2-8... admittedly, Orca sometimes
speaks over SBL(most often if I switch to the console while Firefox is
loading a directory of Bookmarks in tabs), but that's only a few
seconds of interruption, not a complete breakage.
