There are at least two use cases for Perky:
- with no added hardware (like a note taker)
- with a keyboard, braille display, etc.
As for battery life, 30 hours already blows any multi-purpose mobile
device designed for sighted use out of the water, though it does make
me wonder if the Pi 3 has some kind of standby or single core mode
that can be used to push battery life further.
Yep. Clearly, you can power down the RasPi and reboot it, but that's a
nuisance. Aside from the fact that the shutdown and reboot take time,
they also blow away the user's application context, etc.
What I'd really like is a way to keep the OS going in some sort of slow-
speed manner. Failing that, some sort of soft reboot might be OK. I've
been looking into this, without a lot of progress so far.
Debian Linux has Suspend and Hibernate functionality (which can "roll out"
the memory image to swap space and reload it for a soft reboot), but this
apparently requires hardware support (ACPI), which the RasPi lacks.
FWIW, the BeagleBone Black and Green models have a deep sleep mode, where
the CPU goes to sleep and the DRAM goes into self refresh mode. You can
configure the system to wake up based on a signal on a GPIO pin.
