Hi,
I'm a newbi as well but I just endeavored the very same thing with
success 2 days ago so I'll take a stab at giving you things you may want
to verify... Quite a few things could go wrong at either the software
or the hardware level. I actually have a B+ so, hopefully it won't be
too too different from yours.
Hardware:
the audio jack is not a standard 1/8 stereo (TRS) jack like you might
think. It is a TRRS jack, because it contains audio left, audio right &
video composite... I got a cable with that kind of jack at one end & 3
wires with RCA jacksat the other end. I don't know what happens when you
don't use that kind of cable but, this might be a cause of your problem.
Software:
do you have an HDMI where you can send the Raspberry output to... If Do
you have access to a sightling? Because if the login screen can be
seen, that will illiminate a few variables.
If your image is at fault, make sure you created it properly. Copying
the .img file with Windows will not float the boat. You need to use a
more specialized tool. The .img files has to be extracted to the SD
card... I use Roadkill.net's Image for Windows & I had no problem
creating a usable .img file with the downloaded file from the
RaspberryVI site...
Finally, ytour were talking about Wheezy & Jessie, I was told (just 2
days ago) by a knowledgeable fellow on this list to use Jessie as it was
the newer version of the Debian environment... So at the risk of stating
the obvious, you only want to put this one .img file on your SD card...
That should get you started & some more knowledgeable folks will
probably be able to chip in if you require more assistance...

Raspberry VI downloads page, both say they have console speech, I've then
written the image to the SD card but when I turn on the raspberry PI I

neither seem to work. Should it speak when the PI is turned on? Or is
there something I need to do to activate the speech? I'm using a raspberry
3b if that helps.
Any help would be much appreciated as really keen to get the PI up and
running with speech so I can have a play.
