In this world, one eats or is eaten. My favorite topic for discussion when I was a college biology professor was to consider this question: "If the world is an island and we are sheep, could we be happy if there are no dogs?" It seems to me that birds and cats have managed nicely over the eons without our puny attempts to manage either species. And in the same way that cats and birds did not evolve as mutually exclusive species, I don't believe that having outside cats and being a birder are mutually exclusive activities. But as Wallace just said, let's go birding! (And please note that Wallace, one of the leading birders of Tennessee, admits to being a bird hunter. Nothing mutually exclusive about loving birds and enjoying "dead shot birds" -- my grandson's name for fried quail!)
