On Saturday, December 13, I spotted 16 Sandhill Cranes in a cut hayfield in
Dekalb county. From Smithville, they were 3 miles south on Highway 56, about
200 yards on the right (west) side of the highway, on the ridge of the field.
It was 9:15 a.m. and some were still resting. It was chance that I glanced
over and saw them, but knew it was odd to see large gray birds in the middle of
a field.
