After the recent passage of a strong cold front, a large increase in the number of species and the number of birds was noted this morning at Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge at Birchwood (Meigs County). From the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park overlook, hundreds of waterfowl were seen in the Tennessee River; most were nearest the Rhea County side. Because they were so far away, I couldn't be sure of the species present. Three white pelicans were seen in the Hiwassee River from the CRMP. I also saw one adult and 3 immature bald eagles from there. At the viewing area at HWR, I saw one sandhill crane and heard many more in the river out of view. I also saw gadwalls, mallards, one redhead duck, and hooded mergansers there. Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
