TN-birders, 4 of us managed to find the female Long-tailed Duck at the Shute Branch Recreation Area boat launch, in Wilson Co. today at 2:20 pm. It was at the eastern-most boat launch today, NOT at the launch in front of you as you pull in (there are 2 boat ramps in this area). We drove to the right and it was between the boat ramp and the dock to the right (close to Saundersville Rd.). It was only about 15 feet from the shoreline, diving. Great birding, Ron Hoff Clinton, TN From: Neil Kelley Sent: Friday, March 13, 2015 5:36 PM To: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [TN-Bird] Long-tailed duck continues at Shutes Branch Recreation Area - Wilson County Hi all, The female LONG-TAILED DUCK was still present at Shutes Branch on Old Hickory Lake when I stopped there around 10:30 AM this morning (Friday, March 13). I found her exactly as described on the northwest side of the point, very close to shore and diving frequently. Very beautiful and cooperative bird! Thanks to those who reported her on the list. There was also a lot of activity in the GREAT BLUE HERON rookery across the channel which made for entertaining watching. I counted 19 herons (!), but they were moving around a lot and I suspect there were more. Later I stopped very briefly at Snow Bunting Peninsula and had a handsome male BLUE-WINGED TEAL swimming with some NORTHERN SHOVELERS. Neil Kelley Nashville, TN Davidson County
