Six birders took part in the NTOS excursion to Chattanooga this weekend. The Saturday morning downpour dampened our enthusiasm a bit, but shortly after lunch the rains abated and our birding began. Our agenda included Brainerd Levee, Chickamauga Dam, Chester Frost Park and Standifer Gap Marsh. We found good birds at all stops. We were at Standifer Gap Marsh this morning at dawn. This is a wonderful, wild marsh tucked into a very suburban setting. It is a jewel. Virginia Rails were being vocal, but not showing themselves and we were getting short views of airborne Least Bitterns. This changed shortly before we left. A Least Bittern flushed and perched on a reed stem, in the open. It stayed there for at least five minutes. When it flew we refound the bird in the frozen, bill up posture and watched for several more minutes. The six us enjoyed unforgettable looks at this secretive bird. Special thanks to David Patterson for leading us around this great place. Gary Casey Kingston Springs, Tn. Talk and walk softly, carry a big scope. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Topographical Maps located at http://topozone.com/find.asp * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Tennessee Ornithological Society web site at http://www.tnbirds.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net Owner: Wallace Coffey, Bristol, TN jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx (423) 764-3958 =========================================================
