Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Nashville-Davidson Co. TN
13 April 2011
.
The first regular Radnor Lake Wednesday morning Spring Migration Walk for
2011 sponsored by the Nashville chapter of TOS drew 30 birders this morning.
The great turnout applied to birds as well with 51 species observed,
including 9 warbler species.
Highlights included great looks at a singing Blue-winged Warbler along the
dam road, a close up view of a male Northern Flicker working on a hole in
nearby dead tree, an Osprey seen from the platform overlook, which dove into
the lake and came up with a fish. The Osprey was forced to take quick action
and spend several minutes evading an American Crow determined to hassle.
Later we heard a loud Hooded Warbler. This bird cooperated and we got some
fine looks at the colorful warbler. By the Long Bridge a Prairie Warbler
sang out and hopped up into the sunlight for a few "warbler seconds". At the
same time we heard a White-eyed Vireo which got everyone's attention. The
Nashville Warbler, encountered after the Long Bridge, sang a bit and then
became silent. He, however, was never seen. We got to confirm the song of a
Blue-headed Vireo when the bird first sang and then appeared. The
Yellow-throated Vireo that we heard along the road was a treat as well, even
if we never did see that one. Chattering Ruby-crowned Kinglets seemed
particularly numerous throughout the walk.

Thanks to all who participated. We will meet again next week, Wednesday 20
April, in the west parking lot by the Visitor's Center at 7:30am.
